2022 Amenity Winner: Public Resort Courses

Since people have recognized the advantages of nature, outdoor experiences, wellness and sports facilities in the course of the pandemic, the demand for open spaces and a better quality of life is higher than ever today.

Most clubs now offer a full range of amenities and services to attract new members and ensure current members keep coming back – from pools to tennis courts to fitness centers and spas. Here we recognize clubs and golf courses that have made major additions and upgrades to their facilities over the past year.

Submissions were judged on how well the supplement met its goals, as well as aesthetics and financial benefit. The event’s judges included editors from Golf Inc.; Casey Paulson, Sales and Operations Manager, Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club, 2015 Golf Inc. Development of the Year Awardee; and Darryl Bartlett, senior project manager at NMP Golf Construction.

Here are the Public Resort Course award winners in the 2022 Best New Amenities competition.

FIRST PLACE

wellness center

PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness

Girona, Spain

Surrounded by the pine forests, lakes and mountains of the countryside outside of Barcelona, the new wellness center at PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness, which opened in April 2021, is a significant step towards the resort’s goal of being one of the leading golf and wellness destinations to be in the world.

The wellness center is designed as a holistic oasis that encompasses exercise, rest and relaxation. It combines traditional therapies with modern science and cutting-edge expertise. Its design – crafted by the renowned Lagula Arquitectes – draws inspiration from the Japanese principles of untouched natural beauty, quiet solitude and simplicity, and blends seamlessly with the landscape and surrounding gardens.

“Beautiful facilities and very well designed. It has high-end offerings that keep up with current trends. It’s visually amazing.” – Casey Paulson

The center offers a variety of one, two, or three-day programs and includes nine treatment rooms, a fitness center, and a yoga studio.

The spa has proven popular with the hotel’s golf members, who make up 30% of guests. There has been a significant increase in golf guests using the center’s facilities and treatments, particularly the more technology-based therapies such as cryotherapy and IV infusion programs.

Ritz Carlton on Reynolds Lake Oconee

SECOND PLACE

Water sports, kids club

Ritz Carlton on Reynolds Lake Oconee

Greensboro, Ga.

The team at Kuo Diedrich Chi Architects worked with the owners of the Ritz-Carlton on Reynolds Lake Oconee to develop a plan to meet growing family-centric demand during the pandemic, and the solution was a new resort-style family pool without Admission and a tiki bar.

“The design team’s goal was to create a playful yet isolated oasis that complemented the existing Ritz-Carlton amenities,” said Howard Kuo, AIA, Principal, Kuo Diedrich Chi Architects. “With its Lake Oconee-inspired design language and prime scenic location, the Family Pool Complex is a new destination for the young and young at heart.”

Another highlight of the complex is the Kids Club building, a 3,000-square-foot freestanding facility with an arcade and plenty of recreation space for kids and teens to safely enjoy the drier side of the day.

The design team retained much of the existing material palette while honoring the style and lakefront setting of the highly regarded resort. The complex, which opened last July, represents an exciting new chapter for the next generation to enjoy this destination.
