The popular outdoor pool in Ballinakill
A NEW access path for the Ballinakill outdoor pool is expected to be completed by September.
The work is being funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and a design team is close to being appointed.
The news was welcomed by Cllr John Joe Fennelly, who asked for an update on plans at the last Portlaoise Municipal District meeting.
He pointed out that the construction of a new playground next to the swimming pool is well advanced. Ground was broken last year for the playground and amusement park, which will be a great addition to the area, spearheaded by the Ballinakill Community Development Association.
Cllr Fennelly said: “The playground is really progressing and I want to congratulate everyone involved.”
Regarding the new footpath leading to the swimming pool, lead engineer Diarmuid Donohue said the project is due to be implemented later this year and will be funded by the NTA under the Active Travel program.
He confirmed that the tender for a design team has been completed and the winning team will be appointed. Subject to available resources, the District Council plans to complete the work by the third quarter of this year (July-September).
The news was also welcomed by Cllrs Willie Aird and Catherine Fitzgerald. Cllr Fitzgerald said: βIt is such an important area for Ballinakill and we should work hand in hand with the community there. It was a fantastic day out there last year breaking ground.β
